For the first time in 7 years, NZDBA National Dragon boat Champs returned to Auckland's North Shore and our Abreast of Life (ABOL) team went along. Every second year they are in the North Island, and it has been the Blue Lake near Rotorua for 2009, 2011 and 2013. Otherwise, the peak New Zealand Dragon Boat Championships are hosted by Aoraki Dragons at Lake Hood near Ashburton (that is, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016).
So for the new format of racing at Lake Pupuke (two days of racing, 200 metre sprints, 500 metre premier racing and 2,000 metre Turns Races in Standfard boats plus Small Boats), we took two teams - "Abreast of Life" in the BCS Division, and "ABOL Amazons" Womens team.
Amazons team included: Beccy Creswick, Jackie Hancock, Janet Spittlehouse, Jasmine Kirk, Julie Freeman, Kay Wilson, Kerry Tohiariki, Leanne Hammond, Margaret Langham, Monique Gray, Nicki Pooley, Nicky Auld, Peka, Pippa Scott, Rachel Kitson, Robyn Taylor, Sandy Slow, Sarah Carrier, Shiree Hembrow, Yasmine Kaiva, Caller: Sheila Bendall, Sweep: Janice Hewinson
