Moral of the story, don't ever let a flippant remark from the coach go by unheeded.
One night at training, the exchange went something like:
Paddler: "I don't like getting my hair wet at training, I'm going to wear a shower cap"...
Coach replied " I would never get in the boat with you wearing a shower cap"... challenge set.
Game, set and match to ABOL paddlers.
